The latest is Andrew Lloyd Webber's, based on the stage musical. Just how many phantoms are there?

The novel Le Fantôme de l'Opera was published by Gaston Leroux in 1915. The first film was made in Germany - Das Phantom der Oper (1916). Next was Lon Chaney's unforgettable portrayal (1925). Claude Rains was the phantom the same year he was in Casablanca (1943). El Fantasma de la Ópera was a TV mini-series in Argentina (1960). The opera house moved to London when Herbert Lom took the role (1962).

Maximilian Schell played the phantom in Budapest in a made-for-TV movie (1983). Robert Englund was a modern-day NY phantom (1989). Then there were two TV versions (1990), one directed by Tony Richardson. O Fantasma da Ópera was a Brazilian mini-series (1991). And Dario Argento made Il Fantasma dell'opera with Julian Sands (1998).

Now the musical. But don't forget the Phantom of the Paradise, Phantom of the Ritz, and Phantom of the Megaplex. Let us know if you've seen any of these. I have 1925 and 1998.

Lon Chaney's 1925 version beats all the others in a pulp. I've also seen the Claude Rains version, which I didn't think was great, mainly because I have never rated Rains as a terribly good actor. The Phantom of The Paradise is just weird (not in a good way). As for the new version, I'd like to put a bullet in the head of Lloyd Webber, a cultural prostitute who has never written a decent song or had an original idea in his life. Just my opinion. :)
