You're not far wrong there marginal. A good gore movie requires nearly as much humour as blood, otherwise it often becomes plain hard to watch, and in a sense dull, which were two of my issues with the Guinea Pig movies.

There's some cracking films on the list vexxtra linked, but there's at least one which I haven't seen and am unlikely to ever watch as I'm not sure I could stomach it.

i havent been reading this thread much but for me satisfaction is the defining element in a gore movie. i find most attempts at dialog-based humour in schlock movies to be embarassing, mostly due to the caliber of scriptwriting (i never enjoyed bruce campbells epigrammatic quips in the evil dead trilogy), with a few exceptions (braindead/dead alive - in particular lionel's lecherous uncle). stuff like saying "he's screwed" after somebody gets impaled on a giant corkscrew (Jason X) or "groovy" after shooting someone with a shotgun for the 50th time is predictable and formulaic to the point that i find it cheapens the moment.

but yes, satisfaction - i laugh a lot harder when people get maimed in particularly inventive ways, braindead being classic in that department (as well as the faces of death series) and in recent memory, there were some hilariously satisfying kills in the dawn of the dead remake.

and DUH I totally forgot about the Italian "giallo" movies...the Argento films (Suspiria is my fave), Mario Bava, and Fulci...I haven't seen them all but they are totally gory...if you're new to the genre, be sure to check out Suspiria (be warned: the acting and dialogue are crappy, but the gore, lighting, weird music and bizarre set design MORE than make up for it).
